Amscot Supports the Westside Gazette’s Inaugural White Hat Award Gala to fight Sickle Cell Disease

TAMPA FL –Amscot Financial has donated a $2,500 sponsorship in support of the Inaugural Levi Henry, Jr. White Hat Award Gala recognizing community members who exemplify outstanding community service. The gala will be held at the Broward Center of the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, August 7th, from 4-7pm, and represents a joint collaboration between the Westside Gazette Newspaper and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Broward County.

“Sickle Cell Disease affects millions,” says Ian MacKechnie, Amscot’s founder, chairmen and CEO. “Events like this gala are crucial to raising both awareness of the disease and the necessary funding to help fight it. We’re glad to play a part in the process.”

Sickle Cell Disease is an inherited blood disorder that affects red blood cells, and there is currently no universal cure for it. According to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, over 70,000 people living in the U.S. have sickle cell disease, and about 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year.

The charity gala is named after Levi Henry, Jr., founder and publisher emeritus of the Westside Gazette Newspaper and founding member of the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Broward County. All proceeds will go to benefit the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Broward County. The Westside Gazette Newspaper also happens to be celebrating its 45th anniversary.

The event’s guest speaker will be legendary Civil Rights activist Reverend Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. Author, educator, and formerly the executive director of the NAACP, Dr. Chavis is also president of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA, the Black Press of America).
